Crafts

Craftsman

Many young men and women in the local communities in developing countries are forced to migrate to cities and foreign because of the lack of employment in the villages. There they live in dreadful conditions. These men and women are made to work laboriously for paltry sums of money and they are treated brutally.

Many of these migrators are local craftsmen and artisans. They leave their villages because they don’t see the prospects of a decent livelihood in their local communities. These people will never take the risk of staying in their villages and utilizing their skills effectively to support their families.

Our idea for these people is to remain in their villages promoting their crafts and supporting their families. In the beginning, we had to persuade them not to leave their villages, assuring them with the promise of a better income. We had to convince them not to let their centuries old traditional crafts die.

Secondly, we provided them with the instruments and starting material that they needed. In most cases the locals are not able to buy these necessary things because of their extreme poverty.

We also made available to them modernized forms of the instruments where possible. This saves them a lot of time and improves the quality of their work at the same time.

Teams of professional craftsmen and artisans worked with them to improve and modernize their skills further according to international standards.

We have also provided them with financial aid to set up their own small businesses at the local level.

Finally, we make sure that their work gains access to local and international markets. There are hundreds of traditional African crafts which are beautiful and representative of their culture. These include jewelry, clay art, woven baskets, beadwork, stone tableware, gemstones and hundreds of others. This brings them the income that they need and the recognition of their art which gives them something to be proud of.
